South African Lychee and Thompson Grape

The lychee is the most renowned of a group of edible fruits of the soapberry family. Fruits mature in 80–112 days, depending on climate, location, and cultivar. Fruits reach up to 5 cm (2.0 in) long and 4 cm (1.6 in) wide, varying in shape from round to heart-shaped. The thin, tough inedible skin is green when immature, ripening to red or pink-red, and is smooth or covered with small sharp protuberances. The skin turns brown and dry when left out after harvesting. The fleshy, edible portion of the fruit is an aril, surrounding one dark brown inedible seed that is 1 to 3.3 cm long and .6 to 1.2 cm wide. Some cultivars produce a high percentage of fruits with shrivelled aborted seeds known as 'chicken tongues'. These fruit typically have a higher price, due to having more edible flesh. The lychee contains on average a total 72 mg of vitamin C per 100 grams of fruit. On average nine lychee fruits would meet an adult’s daily recommended Vitamin C requirement. Like most plant-based foods, lychees are low in saturated fat and sodium and are cholesterol free.
South Africa's most important white seedless cultivar! It belongs to the Sultanina family and has no rudimentary seeds. It has elongated berries, good bunch sizes, with a fleshy, melting taste. South Africa Thompson Seedless is known for its outstanding appearance, quality and is delicious for fresh eating. The delicious Thompson White seedless grape can be eaten as fresh grapes right off the vines or ideally, the seedless grape can be eaten in salads or grape juice or jam. Thompson White Seedless grapes are one of the most commonly sold grapes nation wide.

Punterella and Black Cabbage

Puntarella appropriately named for its tapered lengthy greens, puntarella chicory's name means; "little pointy thing." The very slender leaves are produced from a pale colored tight heart or stem and as they deepen in color toward the tips of the leaves, the flavor becomes more bitter. Immature puntarella offers a less bitter taste and the shoots are crunchy and crisp. Puntarella may be eaten raw or cooked. This green's unusual flavor is mellowed by cooking. Salads welcome raw shoots and leaves. Typically served with an anchovy, oil and garlic dressing, a flavored anchovy dressing enhances its bitterness to taste nearly sweet.

Cavlenero or Black Italian Cabbage is available year round with winter crops offering the best quality. Low in calories, cabbage offers vitamin C, folic acid, calcium, and potassium. It is said cabbage stimulates the immune system and prevents cancer. Cabbage juice is claimed to be helpful for arthritis, gastric ulcers, depression, and gout. Young raw leaves are tasty in salads. Pairs with beans or pork. Cook until soft in olive oil with a generous amount of garlic for a palate-pleasing side dish.

In the world of fruit- summer is now over!

Peaches, nectarines and cherries, although still available, are past their best and for stone fruit we will be supplying a selection of plums. Hopefully the red plum will be a Ruby Crunch which has a deep red flesh and usually will be quite firm. With this there should be a yellow plum, the variety being a T.C.Sun and this can be eaten whilst it is firm but it will soften to a soft, sweet, juicy condition.

The apples are now all new season from either the U.K. or France. We will supply any new variety of British apples as soon as it becomes available in the market. So far we have used: Discovery, Worcester and Cox and hopefully there will be considerably more varieties to follow.

The pears at the moment are Williams, from Italy, and these will soon be replaced with Conference and  Comice from the U.K. Hopefully these will be from the same grower that we have used for the past 30 years.

The citrus fruit we are using at the moment are Nadracotts, which come from South Africa. These are easy to peel, seedless, juicy and very tasty. I think that these will be available for another month before being replaced by Satsuma’s and Clementines from Spain. Minneolas are also available now and although these are even juicier than the Nadracott they are not quite as sweet but if anyone wants to try them please let us know.......Read more
