Red Seedless Grape
Botanically a berry, the little grape grows in a white, green, pink, red or black bunch on vines. They are generally divided into green, red or black grapes, and seeded or seedless (table) grapes. The sweet table grapes are generally what are bought in shops. They have been with us for a long time - evidence of grape rootstocks have been found in China before the last ice age, and wine from grapes is recorded from Eygpt 6000 years ago, and it's likely it was eaten as fresh fruit before that. Grapes are now grown in every continent, the top producers (2008) being Italy, France, China, the US and Spain.
The sweet juicy grape is rich in vitamins C and K, and is picked as close as possible to maturity as they don't ripen any more once picked. Some varieties have a light bloom on the skin. Some sweet grapes are used for processing into dried fruit like raisins and sultanas.
