Mango
The long-lived mango tree grows in many tropical regions. It has a long 4000 year history, Indians believe that Buddha used to meditate under a mango tree, and is the national fruit of India, Pakistan and the Philippines. Mangoes takes up to 6 months to ripen, and depending on the cultivar, can be from green through to yellow, orange or red. Unripe fruit is very hard and used for cooking, ripe fruit is usually firm but has some 'give', and has smooth skin and a sweet smell. Inside the fruit is succulent, tangy, yellow-orange flesh, enclosing a single, large, flat seed. The skin should be peeled off.
Used widely in Indian and east Asian cookery, the mango has been classed as a 'superfruit', with many vitamins include A, C, E, folate and potassium.
This is one fruit that British importers follow around the world as it is possible to have excellent mangoes all year.
