Mangosteen
Mangosteens are not related to mangoes at all. They grow on trees up to 25m tall, in tropical areas. The most popular mangosteen is the purple variety - as the name suggests the rind ripens from pale green to deep purple. This becomes tougher after picking and allows easier handling of the fruit. The edible flesh surrounds the seeds and is white, tasting sweet and tangy. It appears as a circle of up to 8 segments. Inside each segment is a seed that is not edible. To open the fruit, score the rind with a knife, then prise it apart with thumbs to expose the flesh.
