Pomegranate
Grown as a drought-tolerant bushy shrub or as a small tree, pomegranate remains have been unearthed in ruins over 1000 years old. Pomegranates are berries that are up to 13cm in diameter. The tough red/yellow skin turns dark red as it ripens. Inside, a membrane enclosed around 600 seeds. The seeds are jewel-like, with sweet flesh surrounding each one. The seeds are consumed raw, and are often enjoyed pressed as juice. The membrane is edible but taste slightly bitter; the skin is inedible.
Pomegranates are rich in vitamin C, K and B5, and potassium, folate and antioxidants.
