Fig
Figs must be one of the oldest cultivated fruits on the planet. Partially fossilised figs have been dating to about 9000BC, and figs are mentioned in the several religious works including the Old Testament. They have appeared in Greek mythology, and the leaves have protected the modesty of many an artist's subject.
Figs are not actually a fruit, but a combination of fruit and flower. The flower is never seen as it is inside the fruit, with a tiny hole to allow for pollination. Grown originally in the Middle East, figs are now grown on every continent where the summer is hot. Most commonly grown for consumption are the Common fig and the Brown Turkey fig. Ripe figs feel soft to the touch and skin may have a slight bloom which can be wiped away if needed.
Rich in fibre, antioxidants and trace elements, figs range from yellow through green to brown skins. They are plump and smooth, and when cut open reveal many tiny seeds. Sweet and juicy, figs can be eaten fresh from the hand or as dried fruit.
